A small list that wants exactly what you are offering is better than a bigger list that isn't committed' - Ramsay Leimenstoll.

Contrary to popular belief, bigger doesn't necessarily mean better revenue when it comes to email list building. You cannot buy a committed list of subscribers. In email marketing, relationships and loyalty are earned. So this is where your focus and energy needs to go.

Your goal as an email marketer is to create engaging content for your emails that will drive your subscribers to a particular action. In a nutshell, you want every opened email to turn into a conversion.

So how can you maximise what you already have for optimum conversion? Well, there are three simple things you can do to get started.

BREAK THE ICE

Strike up conversations by asking your subscribers to hit the reply button. Ask them questions inviting them to let you know their thoughts, struggles or pain points. Encouraging them to respond in this way will lift engagement and build trust as you set yourself up as an expert who exists to bring solutions to their problems.

KEEP IT CLEAR AND SIMPLE

Use plain text emails, so they look like emails from a friend. Remember, you are trying to build relationships. Scrap the sales GIFs and banner graphics so it doesn't scream marketing email. These tend to be less effective than plain text. Also, use personalisation by jeeping things on a first-name basis.

IT'S OK TO BE O.T.T.

Step out of your comfort zone and send way more emails than what you feel comfortable with. Research shows 49% of consumers want to receive weekly emails from their favourite brands. So don't deprive your subscribers of the good things you have to offer. Inbox presence equals brand visibility.

BE RELEVANT

Use email as an avenue to provide more value to your recipients. Don't bombard them with sales offers, but share your knowledge and expertise.

Send them links to your recent blog posts or articles and informative guides that will make a difference. The goal is to be outstanding and, if you're going to, sell one to one services.

The bottom line is if you work your email list, it will work for you. Think of email as your biggest relationship-building tool. An opportunity to get to know your subscribers and give them content they look forward to receiving.
